Words from the finalist…
Ecogas is leading the production of biomethane and biofertiliser from organic waste material in New Zealand. New Zealand is a market economy and there is minimal support from Government and no subsidies. Ecogas has had to fund all its business development and facility construction. Ecogas is a Hero and role model to the New Zealand waste and energy sectors as no other company has attempted to commercialise the recycling of municipal and manufacturer’s food waste into energy and fertiliser. In particular the fossil gas industry is looking to the lead being provided by Ecogas as they seek biomethane to augment New Zealand’s declining natural gas resources. In October 2024, Ecogas became the first company to inject biomethane into New Zealand’s national gas infrastructure. As the country’s only commercial anaerobic digestion facility, Ecogas has set a benchmark for innovation in waste management and renewable energy, processing 75,000 tonnes of organic waste annually, with plans to increase capacity to 100,000 tonnes by 2026. Ecogas are not stopping with just one success but are now constructing a second recycling facility in Christchurch based on municipal organic waste as feedstock, and other companies are looking to emulate Ecogas’s success in other regions based on the role modelling of Ecogas.
