Bio Capital’s Warrens Emerald: Setting the Standard for UK Biogas Excellence
Company: Bio Capital
Country: UK
Bio Capital’s Warrens Emerald Biogas Facility is the North East’s largest anaerobic digestion plant and a strong example of what modern AD can deliver. Fully ADCS accredited, it has grown from the region’s first bespoke facility in 2012, increasing output capacity almost sevenfold in a decade and now processing over 122,000 tonnes of food waste annually.
Performance consistently exceeds industry averages, with a gas yield of around 202m³ per tonne and nearly 130,000 MWh of gas-to-grid achieved in 2025. The outcomes are significant: 84,500 tonnes of CO₂e prevented, 168,000 tonnes of biofertiliser delivered to local farms, and an on-site CNG station fuelling up to 200 vehicles per day; connecting food waste collection directly to renewable fuel use.
Backed by ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certifications and a skilled, experienced workforce, Emerald combines reliability with continuous improvement. As Simpler Recycling expands food waste collections, it is well placed as a critical regional asset, demonstrating that food waste can power homes, fuel fleets, and support farming within one integrated circular system.
