Hain Celestial produces some of the UK’s favourite jams and jellies at their Histon facility, where up to 1200 m3/day of liquid waste from production is treated via an on-site Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant before sewer discharge. In 2021, Alpheus partnered with Hain to upgrade this ageing facility as part of an ambitious site energy-reduction programme. The original plant processed only 80% of liquid waste and faced biomass loss and feed stability challenges. The upgrade aimed to process 100% of liquid waste and most of the solid waste jam (with an extra 20% future capacity allowance), generate 13% of the factory’s electricity and achieve over 80% COD reduction.
