Biomethane for Carbon and Community (BCC) Project
Company: Technological University of the Shannon (TUS)
Country: Republic of Ireland
The Biomethane for Carbon and Community (BCC) project, delivered through the Biomethane Development Office (BDO) at the National Bioeconomy Campus, Lisheen, Tipperary, is helping to transform Ireland’s Midlands from a former peat-dependent region into a leading hub for anaerobic digestion and biomethane innovation, with support from the European Union and the Government of Ireland. Delivered in partnership with Tipperary County Council, the Technological University of the Shannon, the Irish Bioeconomy Foundation, and Tipperary Energy Agency, the project has focused on education, awareness, stakeholder engagement, community readiness, and cross-sector collaboration for biomethane development. Key achievements include the launch and delivery of Ireland’s first Postgraduate Certificate course in Biomethane and Renewable Gas Development, the creation of a dedicated biomethane knowledge hub website and FAQ document, public information sessions, and the development of a community-informed 3D physical model to support understanding of biomethane systems. Through conferences, webinars, stakeholder forums, media outreach, and engagement with farming, industry, and local communities, the project has strengthened awareness and confidence in biomethane across Ireland. The project is also producing several strategic outputs, including a Bioeconomy – Biomethane Synergy Report, a national planning and licensing review, and a biomethane feasibility study to support future investment and policy development.
