High-Sulfur Spent Carbon Reactivation
Company: Puragen
Country: United Kingdom
Words from the finalist…
Activated carbon filtration is widely used in the biogas/biomethane industry to remove hydrogen sulfide. Whereas ‘spent’ activated carbons can generally be recycled via thermal reactivation, this is often not possible in the biogas/biomethane sector due to high levels of sulfur, which damages the internals of expensive reactivation kilns, either through deposition of elemental sulfur, or the formation of corrosive acids and SO2. These spent carbons are therefore considered as waste and are landfilled. After extensive R&D and technical development work, CPL/Puragen has developed a unique process allowing us to take back this high-sulfur spent carbon and recycle it at our UK thermal reactivation facility, saving many hundreds of tonnes of waste every year, in the UK alone. We are the only activated carbon company able to offer this service to the UK biogas/biomethane industry.
