Mobile Carbon Filtration Service

Company: Puragen
Country: UK

Activated carbon filtration is widely used in many industries to purify gases and liquids.  In the case of the biogas/biomethane industry, it is used to remove hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and siloxanes, to protect CHP engines or biomethane upgrading equipment, to facilitate grid injection.

Many biogas plants use ‘fixed’ carbon filters, which require on-site servicing when the activated carbon is spent and requires replacement.  Servicing of these fixed filters requires additional manpower and is often accompanied by temporary plant shutdown, since the filters cannot be bypassed due to the impurities in the biogas.  In addition, spent activated carbon, when used for biogas purification, can be odorous, dusty and, in extreme cases, cause unwanted exotherms, meaning on-site carbon handling is undesirable and can cause safety concerns.

Puragen’s solution to this issue is to offer a range of mobile carbon filters, of various sizes and flowrates, which offer a convenient ‘plug & play’ solution for biogas and biomethane producers.  When the carbon is spent, Puragen delivers a fresh filter and takes the spent unit away to one of its Service Centres, where the spent carbon is safety removed and sent for recycling at its UK thermal reactivation facility.  This solution avoids the inconvenience, mess and potential safety issues associated with on-site carbon handling and also dramatically reduces biogas plant downtime, since mobile filters can typically be changed out in 30-60 minutes, compared to a typical on-site fixed filter service operation, which can involve a full day’s work for a team of operatives.
