From Sugarcane Residues to Renewable Energy: Cocal’s Biogas Plant

Company: COCAL COMERCIO INDUSTRIA CANAA ACUCAR E ALCOOL SA
Country: Brazil

With over 40 years of experience, we leverage the full potential of sugarcane for the production of ethanol, sugar, electricity, biomethane, food-grade CO2, and dry yeast, based on a sustainable and responsible supply chain. We offer the market and society renewable energy sources, produced with responsibility, sustainability, and respect for people and the environment.

Inaugurated in 2025, Cocal’s second biogas plant in Paraguaçu Paulista (SP) converts vinasse and filter cake, byproducts of sugarcane, into renewable energy and biofertilizers.

The unit has an installed capacity to generate 127,200 Nm³/day of biogas, resulting in a production of 60,000 Nm³/day of biomethane. The biomethane is compressed and intended to replace fossil fuels in heavy fleets and industrial clients.

We also produce biofertilizers, which return to the company’s own sugarcane fields. This cycle significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by replacing fossil fuels and mineral fertilizers.
